Young Council-member Program Introduction.
In an effort to engage our youth in the public policy process in local government and prepare the next generation to lead, Esmerlda Soria (City Council Vice President) is proud to initiate the 2017- 2018 "Young Councilmember Program" to foster civic education and community engagement among our young people.
This is a six month enrichment program that brings together select high school students to gain understanding of local government and our community. Students will participate in monthly sessions featuring guest speakers and field trips focused on agriculture, business, medicine, law enforcement, and development. Students will also get a unique insight on how local government functions with an opportunity to meet and learn from my Council colleagues, our Mayor, and various Department heads.
The "Young Councilmember Program" application period is open until September 30th 2017 and the program will run from November to May. Applicants must reside in Fresno City Council District 1 and/or attend school in a High School within District 1. Students must also have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Selected participants must attend and participate in all sessions.
